The pioneering American guitarist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose distinctive acoustic voice helped redefine modern jazz and world music, has died at 85.
Ralph Towner, born in Chehalis, Washington, on 1st March 1940, was raised in a musical family. His mother was a piano teacher, his father a trumpet player, and it was through them that he began his journey with music. After early studies in piano and composition at the University of Oregon, Towner expanded his training in Europe before ultimately turning to the guitar.
Towner’s career was marked by his talent and skill as a multi-instrumentalist, and his creativity. Comfortable on classical, 12-string, and nylon-string guitars, as well as on piano and other instruments, he brought together elements of jazz, classical music, folk, and global influences into his own singular sound. He became widely known as a founding member of the 1970s quartet Oregon, built alongside Collin Walcott, Paul McCandless, and longtime collaborator and bassist Glen Moore, creating an ensemble in which acoustic explorations blurred genre boundaries and opened new avenues for jazz and world music.
In 1973 Towner embarked on a lifelong relationship with the ECM label, where he released more than twenty albums as a leader or co-leader, establishing a body of work celebrated for its contemplative beauty and sonic depth. His compositions, including the much-loved 'Icarus', became touchstones for guitarists and listeners across generations. He collaborated with many of the most respected musicians of his era, including bassist Gary Peacock, pianist Keith Jarrett, guitarist John Abercrombie, and vibraphonist Gary Burton.
Highly respected by fellow musicians, Towner was known for his quiet dedication to his craft and his generous musical spirit. His influence extended well beyond his own recordings, shaping the work of acoustic and improvising musicians across generations.
Ralph Towner passed away on 18th January 2026, in Rome, Italy, where he had lived in later years with his wife, Italian actress Mariella Lo Sardo. He is survived by his daughter, Celeste Towner.
The following epitaph has been posted on his website: “Never has one person conceived of such beautiful music, a triumph of human creativity, and brought it to a world audience. He was one of the greatest of men, not only in his artistic spirit, but in his generous and magnanimous character.”
