Jack DeJohnette (1942 - 2025)

The trailblazing American drummer, composer, and bandleader whose innovative work across jazz, fusion, and avant-garde music influenced generations of musicians has died at 83.

Born in 1942 in Chicago, Illinois, John “Jack” DeJohnette grew up in a musical household and was drawn to percussion from an early age. After studying music formally, he began his professional career in the early 1960s, playing with local bands before moving to New York, where he quickly became a sought-after collaborator. 

In the mid-1960s, DeJohnette moved to New York, quickly establishing himself with Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, and Charles Lloyd’s quartet. His growing reputation brought him to the attention of Miles Davis, and he became essential in shaping the sounds of Davis' fusion albums such as Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson, and On the Corner. By the end of the decade, he had already contributed to some of the most groundbreaking recordings in jazz history.

Beyond his work with Davis, DeJohnette was a prolific bandleader and collaborator. He released many albums under his own name, beginning with The DeJohnette Complex in 1968, and led ensembles such as Special Edition, Gateway, and New Directions. During the 1970s and 1980s, his long-standing relationship with ECM Records saw him produce landmark recordings with Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny, and Keith Jarrett – most notably through Jarrett’s trio that also featured bassist Gary Peacock. He was additionally a frequent sideman for Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, and Wadada Leo Smith. 

Throughout his career, DeJohnette received numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards and recognition from DownBeat magazine as one of the greatest drummers in jazz history. He remained active in performing, recording, and mentoring young musicians well into his eighties, embodying a lifelong commitment to innovation and collaboration.

Jack DeJohnette died on 27th October and is survived by his wife, Lydia DeJohnette, and his two daughters.
