About

Les Misérables is the world’s longest-running musical and a towering masterpiece of the stage. Against the sweeping backdrop of 19th-century France, this epic tale of redemption and the resilience of the human spirit follows Jean Valjean’s quest for a new life, pursued by the relentless shadows of his past.

Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed, brilliant new staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed “Les Mis for the 21st Century” (Huffington Post), “a reborn dream of a production” (Daily Telegraph) and “perfect theatre in a perfect theatre” (Sunday Telegraph). The 40th Anniversary all-star cast includes Killian Donnelly (Valjean), Bradley Jaden (Javert), Katie Hall (Fantine), James D. Gish (Enjorlas), Shan Ako (Eponine), Beatrice Penny-Toure (Cosette), and Jac Yarrow (Marius).

The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the hit songs; “I Dreamed a Dream”, “On My Own”, “Bring Him Home”, “One Day More”, “Do You Hear the People Sing?” and many more. Seen by over 150 million people worldwide in 57 countries and in 22 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals.

From Cameron Mackintosh: “If I was to say that what happened to Les Misérables is the dream I dreamed, it would not be true – Les Mis has been a success beyond my wildest dreams. Now, 40 years later, new audiences continue to discover the extraordinary impact of this emotional tour de force, while existing Les Mis fans keep coming back for more. Les Mis is one of the most performed musicals ever, by both professionals and amateurs, and has been seen on stage, screen and in concert arenas by hundreds of millions of people around the world”

From Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg: “40th anniversary! How amazing! Attending one rehearsal at the Barbican Theatre in 1985, where in front of our admiring eyes the new version of Les Misérables was being brought to life, Alain said: “I hope that we will still be running in two months.” After 40 years, in the light of all the challenges facing the creative arts, we are lucky and thankful that we can keep dreaming!”

It wasn't recorded live but it carries the fervour and impulsive excitement of a company thoroughly immersed in performance mode...The undoubted star of this album though is Katie Hall's Fantine. Her 'I dreamed a dream' is honestly as good as it gets - wonderful engagement with the text and an excitingly modulated sound across the range. Terrific.
