About
In this third volume, Cédric Tiberghien completes his tour of the art of variation in Beethoven and his later avatars. Taking in the experimental daring of Ligeti (Musica ricercata) and the poetic games of Kurtág (Játékok), this sweeping survey is completed with the Diabelli Variations, the absolute peak of Beethoven’s piano music.

Tiberghien's usual refinement provides the foundation of the performance [of the Diabellis]. But from the presentation of the theme, this performance is striking for the way he boosts the jaggedness, the rhythmic quirks and the harmonic oddities - and for the way he spotlights normally hidden voices - without ever seeming to impose himself on the music.

Ligeti's Music ricercata makes a striking opening to the album - Tiberghien's commitment to thoroughly exploring this structural element is unwavering, yet so is his beguiling way with Ligeti's parody of composers from the past...The major work here is of course the Diabelli Variations, and Tiberghien faces one of the biggest challenges of the solo piano repertoire fearlessly. He brings a swagger to the theme, promising that this is going to be anything but a wallflower interpretation.
