Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello, BWV 1007–1012, stand among the most revered monuments of the Western musical canon. Written most likely during Bach’s years in Köthen between 1717 and 1723, these works transformed the possibilities of instrumental writing, demonstrating how a single melodic line could evoke an entire world of harmony, architecture and expressive depth. Over the centuries the suites have inspired musicians far beyond the cello repertoire, becoming a touchstone for performers across many instruments. Few artists, however, have approached them with the depth of engagement and artistic authority of Eliot Fisk, one of the most distinguished guitarists of our time. A direct disciple of the legendary Andrés Segovia and long recognised as one of the most adventurous voices in the classical guitar world, Fisk has devoted more than three decades to studying and performing these works. The present recording represents the culmination of that lifelong dialogue with Bach’s music.
