About
Giacomo Puccini’s much-loved opera Tosca contains some of his most famous lyrical arias. It is also a powerful and tragic theatre piece set in politically dangerous times featuring moments of courage and romantic tenderness. The expressive force of its narrative and the power of Puccini’s strikingly inventive score has made it one of the most frequently staged operas of all time. Daniele Gatti conducts this live performance from Maggio Musicale Fiorentino with a cast acclaimed for its impressive vocal and dramatic characterisation.

I was particularly taken by the production's Cavaradossi - unmistakeable as an Italian tenor of the old school without even checking the cast list. Piero Pretti's voice is light, clear and almost innocent-sounding, very different from the darker, more muscular tone favoured by most modern Puccini tenors... It's an interesting interpretation, worth hearing.

Initial impressions are very favourable, thanks to the rich, precise orchestral sound of the Florence orchestra under Daniele Gatti… interesting conducting and the singers’ lively, committed interpretations
