About

Ensemble Modern's close connection to Kurt Weill's music has resulted in numerous performances and recordings, including benchmark interpretations of "Die Dreigroschenoper", "Mahagonny Songspiel" and "Chansons des Quais". in 2024, the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music facilitated a tour of the USA with works by Hindemith, Korngold, Schönberg and Weill. The tensions between artistic awakening and political upheaval were palpable. The album "Dancing on a Volcano" with HK Gruber, mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta and the vocal ensemble amarcord was recorded in the Cologne Philharmonie.

Awards and reviews

The jewel in the crown is Gruber and Christian Muthspiel’s Kurt Weill Foundation-sanctioned arrangement of The Seven Deadly Sins. Wallis Giunta is more opera diva than Weimar chanteuse but there’s no shortage of bite in her voice, while Amarcord’s male quartet kvetch and wheedle as her rapacious family. Gruber’s razor-sharp yet flexible interpretation drips idiomatic venom.
