About
American Tapestry brings together four unique voices in American music: Samuel Barber, Wynton Marsalis, Erich Wolfgang Korngold and John Williams. The album reflects the belief that American classical music is not a single style but rather an amalgamation and dialogue between many different voices.
The Calidore String Quartet, acclaimed for performances across the globe, is recognised as one of today’s foremost chamber-music ensembles. From its base in New York, the group has toured widely throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Marsalis's music always has a sharp dramatic sense, and the Calidore seize on that in all three movements. John Williams arranged music from his film Lincoln at the Calidore's request, and the five-minute-long cut from the score titled 'With Malice Toward None' makes it point in an appropriately plain-spoken way.

The album kicks off with Samuel Barber's String Quartet, Op. 11, in a performance that allows the Calidore to demonstrate one of their great strengths as an ensemble, namely the resplendent luminosity of their sound...The Calidore have said that part of their intention when assembling this album was, exactly as its title states, to demonstrate the rich tapestry of American music as a melting pot of genres, voices, and inspirations. This wonderful recording achieves precisely that.
