Shostakovich’s String Quartets Nos. 6 to 12, written between 1956 and 1968, are marked by the relative freedom regained after the death of Stalin. In the second volume of its complete set, the Cuarteto Casals explores this period of a dozen years in which the composer never ceased to innovate, constantly handling new ideas.

Anyone who enjoyed the first volume of the Cuarteto Casals' Shostakovich is unlikely to be disappointed by the second, which has just as much textural transparency, agility, sensitivity and drama.

The Cuarteto Casals hail from Spain, land of sun, not Siberian cold, and the playing’s warmth and passion bring out every drop of humanity that this anguished music possesses. The performers are superb technicians, sensitive and gutsy, equally skilled at razor-sharp unity, kinetic flow, ghostly wisps, thunderous pizzicatos — whatever Shostakovich requires...Listen to this splendid set as much as you want.
