The new album by the RIAS Chamber Choir under the direction of Justin Doyle is a musical homage to Renaissance Marian devotion, bringing to life the sacred splendor of this era. Its focus is the moving Missa Ave Maris Stella by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611), the “Spanish Palestrina.” This artful setting of the famous hymn captures the poetry and depth of Marian devotion, in which Mary is honored as the “Star of the Sea” and the “Queen of Heaven.” The album is complemented by exquisite motets by Victoria and Francisco Guerrero (1528–1599), the celebrated master of Seville. Guerrero's motets, such as O sacrum convivium and Ave virgo sanctissima, combine contrapuntal refinement with touching expressiveness, impressively conveying the resonant spirituality of this era.
