About
La Caravane du Caire became the greatest success of its composer, André Grétry, as soon as it premiered in 1783. This flamboyant opéra-ballet takes us to a fantasised Orient, where colourful characters meet: an ambitious slave trader, an idle Pasha and distraught lovers experience a thousand adventures, in a sumptuous setting, to the sound of Grétry’s superb instrumentation. In a whirlwind of precious fabrics, the Ballet de l’Opéra Royal accompanies Hervé Niquet and Le Concert Spirituel in a brilliant rendition of this late 18th-century masterpiece.

March 2025
The chorus and orchestra of Le Concert Spirituel are all one could wish for, and Hervé Niquet conducts admirably. One pleasure not to be missed is the sight of the percussion stick known as a ‘jingling Johnny’. I enjoyed this enormously and so, I hope, will you.

a production that will delight the eyes and ears of those who keep a sense of proportion. Stand-out singers include Robert Gleadow as the cartoon villain of Pasha and Hélène Guilmette, radiantly sincere as the woman of his dreams. The dancing is great fun, the scenery is colourful, and no humans were harmed during the making of this DVD and Blu-ray.
