About

The Nocturne is one of the most popular and beloved forms of music. Yet, many of us today do not know the name of its creator: John Field. Born in Ireland, Field lived during the same period as Beethoven, and his musical legacy has influenced not only Chopin but also generations of composers up to the present day. “By recording this album, I hope to share the story of this historically important composer and to encourage listeners to discover the origins of the Nocturne.” Alice Sara Ott

April 2025

[Ott] had a brilliant pianistic career in her teens, but at 21 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Now 36, she has never stopped performing; this album is just the latest measure of her heroic triumph over adversity. With its pearlised touch, and in the halo of a golden glow, her pianism is a delight: Field could not have wished for a better advocate.

March 2025

Ott deftly captures their delicate poise without ever resorting to overplaying. Pellucid textures are beautifully rendered and the individual lyricism of each piece finely wrought.

6th February 2025

Ott plays them all with great affection, never attempting to make them seem more profound or expressively complex than they are, and in treating this neglected music simply at face value, she has done it proud.

4th February 2025

Field’s more whimsical offerings have a playful spirit all their own, with memorable melodies regularly peppered with decorative runs somewhat akin to whorls of icing sugar enthusiastically squirted over a cake...Ott’s playing can just occasionally seem too neatly manicured, but her heart is always in the right place. So are her fingers.
