Blasius Ammon: Sacred Works

Huelgas-Ensemble (early music ensemble), Paul Van Nevel

Blasius Ammon: Sacred Works
In short, this is great music, performed by stunning voices, but this live recording just falls short of the high polish I associate with this ensemble.

About

World premiere recordings of exquisite sacred works by Blasius Ammon, all of them hidden gems of Renaissance polyphony.

The celebrated Huelgas Ensemble presents Blasius Ammon - Sacred Works, a tribute to the 16th century Tyrolean composer Blasius Amon (ca. 1560-1590). A child prodigy trained at the prestigious Hofkapelle of Archduke Ferdinand II, Amon's music blends the intricate polyphony of the Franco-Flemish tradition with the vibrant Venetian innovations he encountered during his studies in Italy. Despite his untimely death at the age of 30, Amon left a remarkable corpus of sacred works that highlight his mastery of counterpoint and stylistic versatility.

This album showcases some of Ammon's finest compositions, including the ‘Missa quatuor vocum pro defunctis’, which exemplifies the transparent and linear polyphony of the Franco-Flemish school, and his ‘Sacrae cantiones’, a collection of motets that reflect Amon's ability to fuse his polyphonic roots with the rich harmonic textures of the Venetian style. Huelgas Ensemble brings these works to life with their expert playing, capturing Amon's unique musical ‘tightrope act’ between two of the most influential traditions of the era.
