Awards and reviews

  • Presto Recording of the Week
    8th November 2024

December 2024

This release will delight Tchaikovsky aficionados, offering a healthy, highly expressive and, above all, pleasurable approach to the piano on the most basic level. It demonstrates fresh music-making unadorned by superficial virtuosity or the encrustations of received wisdom.

8th November 2024

Liu is a precise player, and understatement is a central quality of his interpretation. His articulation is exacting, and his dynamic shadings are subtle, with a particularly well controlled pianissimo. The piano is close-mic’d, but the recording matches Liu’s intimate sense of scale and happily avoids the practice of artificially stretching the size of the instrument as some engineers do.

14th November 2024

His playing is exquisitely polished, but free of mannerisms; every phrase seems to have a totally natural shape and its own colour...The whole disc is a model of ego-free piano playing.
