Her style seems rather instinctive, often cinematic in scope, and takes inspiration from many sources, be it poetry, painting or other music…The Knights deliver the music with impeccable ensemble, and are perfect advocates of this music.

All four of Clyne’s chosen works focus on string orchestra. This is territory familiar from Tchaikovsky and Dvořák, and Clyne’s Shorthand uses quotations from the “Kreutzer” violin sonatas of Beethoven and Janáček to similarly heartwarming, near-romantic effect...[Prince of Clouds] is perhaps the most wide-ranging in spirit, exploring some of the more extreme contrasts in how to write for strings.

What’s remarkable is the way in which the pieces that make up Clyne’s musical puzzles all fit together so well – testimony, perhaps, to the composer’s ability to imbue each idea with its own distinctive character and identity.

Clyne’s urge to follow her heart is particularly strong in the mellifluous outpourings of Within Her Arms, written in 2008 in the wake of her mother’s sudden death. But every piece here is vibrant and memorable. Just listen and go with the flow.
