About

Following on from his phenomenally successful Grammy-nominated first Puccini album in 2015, “Nessun Dorma”, Jonas Kaufmann now presents a new album of Puccini highlights to mark the composer’s anniversary year 2024. “The greatest tenor of his generation” (The Guardian) has selected for his new recording six great duets and scenes with six outstanding sopranos – legendary love scenes, emotionally-charged Love Affairs. He is joined by sopranos Anna Netrebko (in Manon Lescaut), Asmik Grigorian (in Il Tabarro), Malin Byström (in La Fanciulla del West), Maria Agresta (in Madama Butterfly), Pretty Yende (in La Bohème) and Sonya Yoncheva (in Tosca). Two famous tenor arias “E lucevan le stelle” (Tosca) and “Che gelida manina!” (La Bohème) complete the attractive programme, with Asher Fisch conducting the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna. The album is presented in limited edition deluxe packaging, including printed interview with Jonas Kaufmann, full lyrics, photos and many of the original Ricordi opera posters.

13th September 2024

It is good to welcome Maria Agresta as an authentically Italian Madam Butterfly, and Malin Byström’s voice records well in La fanciulla del West, where she and Kaufmann make a splendid coupling in the heartfelt first meeting between Minnie, the “girl of the golden West”, and an outlaw on the run...None, though, match Anna Netrebko for no-holds-barred passion in Manon Lescaut.

28th September 2024

A studio recording allows him to find his best form. Some upper notes strain a little, but his lyricism and musical intelligence are intact...He remains a serious advocate. This will delight fans. As a showcase for Puccini’s range and emotional intensity, it’s a good place to start.

25th September 2024

Sensitive to every inflexion in the texts, Kaufmann’s voice is steady and always dramatically engaged, though it’s often an easier voice to enjoy when he’s lowering the decibels and not navigating the upward plunge into his top range...Asmik Grigorian and Maria Agresta prove particularly characterful in Il tabarro and Madama Butterfly.

The New York Times 26th September 2024

His easy star power enlivens Cavaradossi’s suavity and Dick Johnson’s rugged, weary machismo...Best of all: Asmik Grigorian’s haunted Giorgetta, in an excerpt from Il Tabarro, which draws a fatalistic ardor out of Kaufmann that might surprise listeners. No trepidation required.
