About

Pairing the music of Schoenberg with the composer’s own paintings, "Expressionist Music" is a new album featuring remarkable interpretations of Schoenberg from soprano Claire Booth with pianist Christopher Glynn. This evocative album explores the expanses of human emotion through Arnold Schoenberg's captivating songs, each corresponding to Schoenberg's paintings. The particular works chosen for this recording encompass themes of expectation, flesh, nocturne, hatred, satire, thinking, and tears, providing a comprehensive journey through the complexities of human nature. Schoenberg's profound connection to painting is reflected in these songs, unveiling shifting colours, raw emotions, and profound sensuality. July 2024

Adopting this approach [curation around Schoenberg's paintings] enables Booth and Glynn to maximise the variety of musical expression explored in each of the themes with performances that respond vividly to all the twists and turns in Schoenberg’s complex and ever-changing musical armoury.

July 2024

There’s never any doubting the commitment of the performances. Booth’s voice is bright and vibrant, conveying fiery urgency but always staying on the right side of shrillness. She’s a natural communicator, too; she draws you in and rarely lets you go.

the immaculate way in which each number is presented here, with every flick and tremor of the vocal lines and of the piano accompaniments precisely caught, would make that [a recording of The Book of the Hanging Gardens] something to relish.

Booth lavishes close attention on every word and is thrilling when soaring, exultant, into the skies...a pleasure to find these gifted performers digging up beauty in thorny places and treating Schoenberg with love.
