I think it is the middle tableau, ‘Jeux de vagues’, where the philosophy of both conductor and players really comes into its own. It is, in a word, scintillating: wonderfully rhythmic with crystal clarity throughout the texture and with such freedom as to make even the portamento in the strings naturally sway and swing.
