About

Slovakian label Pavlik Records, release another CD by their star violinist Milan Pala. On this disc he also plays viola - an instrument built for him in 2002 by Jan Hus Bursik - and is accompanied by Katarina Palova. The full title of his new selection is the somewhat forbidding - Bronius Kutavicius - From Madrigal to Aleatoric Composition for Violin and Viola Works 1962 - 2012.

Lithuanian born, Bronius Kutavicius (1932 - 2021) is best known locally for his choral works spanning the 70s and 80s. These picked up on his reimagining of Lithuanian pagan rituals.

Elements of these can be found in the music on this disc, as Kutavicius works his way musically towards, through and beyond, moving from Madrigal to Aleatoric forms. There are Sonatas for Violin and Viola from 1962 and 1969, pieces that use rhythm, the 1972 multi-movement From Madrigal tio Aleotoric Composition and Andata e ritorno for Violin and Tape (2012), that seems to bring the selection full circle.

These pieces are not without technical difficulties. It goes without saying that Milan Pala is more than confident in projecting the music of Bronius Kutavicius.
