About
• Star-studded studio recording of Puccini’s Turandot featuring an exceptional cast: Sondra Radvanovsky (Turandot), Jonas Kaufmann (Calaf), Ermonela Jaho (Liu), Mattia Olivieri (Ping), Gregory Bonfatti (Pang), Siyabonga Maqungo (Pong), Michele Pertusi (Timur), Michael Spyres (Altoum), and Michael Mofidian (Mandarino)
• This new version features the original finale composed by Franco Alfano (Puccini died before completing the score), including the ~104 bars famously omitted by Toscanini. And of course, the world-famous opera hit “Nessun dorma” sung by Jonas Kaufmann
• The first time Antonio Pappano, Jonas Kaufmann, and Sondra Radvanovsky have undertaken Turandot
• Follows the multi-award-winning 2015 recording of Aida and Madama Butterfly
• Performances with Pappano at London’s Royal Opera House in March/April 2023
• “…Turandot is infused with a beautiful subtlety, emerging within an opera full of biting irony. Puccini moves between tragedy and lightness, and that's something I really like.” – Antonio Pappano
Press Reviews:
• “This “Turandot” promises to be one of the best recordings in recent years. [...] He [Pappano] gave a passionate reading of the score, extracting all the exoticism and oriental rhythms that Puccini wrote into his score. […] Pappano knows how to keep tension in the orchestra. He plays along with the singers at every moment, as if the orchestra is breathing with them, creating instances of delicacy and beauty, especially in Liu’s arias” (Operawire, 30 March 2022)
• “Revelation of the evening Sondra Radvanosky, making her debut in the role of Turandot: in her voice she has frost and fire, power of emission and granitic high notes” (Avvenire, 15 March 2022; Sandro Cappelletto)
• “for the first time the complete opera is therefore recorded with Alfano's first finale” (Connessi all’Opera, 15 March 2022, Filippo Antichi)

May 2023
It is the attention Pappano pays to crafting the contrasts between passages of intense sensuality and of mechanistic brutality, casting new light on a familiar score in the process, which really makes this a major recording event.
Nov/Dec 2023
[Jaho] She possesses a rich lyric soprano and can float lovely high notes or sing them with full, ringing tone. Jaho has a particularly appealing vibrato, which she uses to good dramatic effect. In a role where the competition has been Tebaldi, Caballé, and Freni, Jaho can hold her head high...an essential recording of Turandot.
14th December 2023
Sondra Radvanovsky, Ermonela Jaho and Jonas Kaufmann are the star cast, but the blazing orchestral detail unleashed by Pappano almost steals the show.
March 2023
A Turandot for the ages? This recording holds its own against venerable competition and, in the original Alfano completion, is unique.
April 2023
After Jaho, the orchestra and chorus are the best reasons for acquiring this set...Pappano revels in the modernist textures and ‘exotic’ colouration of Puccini’s post-Stravinsky orchestra and brings a sickly quality to the chorus’s ruminations on violent death...This Turandot may not outclass the finest classic recordings, but it has Alfano’s complete completion, and there is enough interpretative interest from the principals and Pappano to justify adding it to a collection.
10th March 2023
[Radvanovsky's] is a nuanced performance that brings sympathy and depth to a potentially inscrutable character…Kaufmann offers plenty of subtlety and shading... For all the rousing singing on display, I should not neglect the contribution from the Santa Cecilia orchestra and moreover the guiding hand of Pappano: his pacing is spot-on throughout.
December 2023
Pappano’s incandescent take on Puccini’s unfinished final opera is a cracker. Radvanovsky incarnates the imperious Turandot, Kaufmann is tender and ferocious as Calaf and Jaho brings heart-stopping vocal beauty to Liù.
9th March 2023
The palette of orchestral colour is huge and constantly shifting, Pappano drawing out the music’s particular exotic atmosphere.
9th March 2023
Kaufmann is an unstoppable and outsize force, bigger even than this opera demands. Once she arrives Radvanovsky is equally gripping, helped by Pappano using the long version of Franco Alfano’s completion...However, the first thing to hit the listener is the recording’s depth and the orchestra’s punch and glow.
International Classical Music Awards 2024
The Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia plays brilliantly, and the interpretation underlines the opera’s modern features and symphonic cohesion without losing anything of the genuine Puccini- lyricism and Italian flow. Sondra Radvanovsky, Jonas Kaufmann and Ermonela Jaho create intense and nuanced roles, and the original Alfano finale adds value to the well-produced recording.
