About

In the seventeenth century, the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice took in young orphan girls who received advanced musical instruction. The concerts given there attracted visitors from all over the world, curious to hear these divine voices which remained invisible, since the girls performed hidden behind the grilles of the chapel gallery. Vivaldi became Maestro de’Concerti of the Pietà in 1714, and it was his pupils who performed his famous Nisi Dominus.

Today they are succeeded by the mezzosoprano Eva Zaïcik, who brings out the full poignancy of the aria ‘Cum dederit’. Another motet by Vivaldi, Invicti bellate, also composed for the Pietà, features in this programme planned and conducted by Vincent Dumestre. He invites us on a musical journey centred

on the figure of woman and on divine praise, with composers awaiting discovery such as Serafino Razzi (1534 - 1619) and Soto de Langa (1531 -1611).

November 2022

Zaïcik is the foremost beneficiary of the programme. Her clear mezzo-soprano voice, with its tonal purity, tightly controlled vibrato and fluent virtuosity serve Vivaldi’s motets Invicti Bellate and Nisi Dominus very well..the Nisi Dominus, with its tenderly played viola d’amore accompaniment in the Gloria, and imaginative continuo realisation throughout, is one of the most beguiling performances that I know.

Vincent Dumestre can do no wrong, and he deserves kudos for assembling a varied, stimulating program that works well, despite the fact that a century and a half separate Razzi and Soto de Langa from Locatelli and Vivaldi. What looks like a disorganized farrago on paper is a tasty stew in practice. Dumestre caresses the music and brings out its lively brilliance without driving it too hard.

Throughout the disc, Vincent Dumestre offers well-judged direction of his multihued band, the continuo group featuring theorbo, guitar, colascione and chitarrino as well as keyboard instruments.
