About
Massenet was not only the composer of Manon and Werther. In the shadow of his stage works slumber many mélodies decked out in subtle and delicate orchestrations, which we are delighted to revive here. These previously unrecorded works have been entrusted to a team of first-rate artists, most of them fervent champions of French poetry and its musical settings.

Of the others, I was especially taken by the tenor Cyrille Dubois...Call this recording one of ‘easy listening’ if you like, but in these times of war, strikes and inf lation, surely such finely crafted and enjoyable works have their place.

The quality of the singing on this CD from Bru Zane is marvelous, particularly from Gens, Dubois, and Devos, and the songs, like those on Sandrine Piau’s album for Alpha, are immediately attractive. As ever with this company, production standards are high, with an excellent booklet and detailed notes, texts, and translations. The sound is fine, with the voices slightly forward and crystal clear.

[Niquet] is wonderfully alert to the mood and tone of each song, and the playing is delectable throughout. It’s a lovely album, and I look forward to the second volume.
