About

Jakub Józef Orliński and pianist Michał Biel’s new album is a tribute to 19th- and 20th-century composers of their native Poland.

Michał Biel describes the music as: “Basically, a lot of very intense, very Polish, post-Romantic music!”

Repertoire features many beautiful songs by Karel Szymanowski, Henryk Czyż, Stanisław Moniuszko, Mieczysław Karłowicz, and Tadeusz Baird.

The titular Farewells cycle by Henryk Czyż is an absolute “discovery” in the countertenor voice, almost unrecognisable through this fresh lens

July 2022

the rare beauty of Orliński’s countertenor makes the whole recital an unusually introspective experience – and by any standards of Polish song recitals, this is an extraordinarily wide programme, one equally shaped by the excellent pianist Michał Biel.

6th May 2022

Many of the qualities which make this an album to conjure with are revealed within the first minute: Orliński’s evident relish of the Polish language (particularly the expressive possibilities of the many ‘sz’ sounds), the unforced power of his lower register, and the pair’s instinctive awareness of when to step on the gas and when to let the music breathe.

5th May 2022

yes, there are moments when you miss the heft a fruity mezzo-soprano or baritone could bring to a certain note or phrase, but Orliński’s commitment and directness win through, showcasing some real gems.

Opera News November 2022

This recital of Polish song…lets [Orliński] demonstrate just how musical his native language can be. The tangy vowels lends resonance to his tone; the supremely liquid consonants move the vocal line forward.
