Its sonorities and textures are extraordinary. Orchestral, electronic and sampled sounds run into each other to create astonishing fusions...There are many roles, all of them inhabited with unfailing assurance by an exceptionally strong cast. Leading all is Kate Lindsey, her Orlando simply a stunning performance.

Woolf's 1928 novel provides Neuwirth with a framework to explore boundaries of almost every possible variety, blurring the lines between sound, speech and music, stage and screen, and above all musical styles: the score draws on influences as disparate as Renaissance polyphony, Stravinsky-esque neo-Classicism, protest-song and punk, and does so with a dizzying sleight-of-hand that’s hard to resist.
