Like many period instruments practitioners, Gaigg favors fast tempos. The second movement of the “Great” bounces along jauntily—and while Schubert’s music sometimes loses weight from the diet that has been imposed on it, the corresponding gain in energy is not a bad thing. For better or worse, but probably more the former, these performances will compel you to hear Schubert’s symphonies in a new light.

it is the ‘Great’ C major that is perhaps the gem of the present set: a notably intense performance, played with tireless propulsion and infectious fervour.
