About
The second instalment in the Ehnes Quartet’s survey of the late Beethoven Quartets, recorded in the US with their producer overseeing the sessions from London, as the pandemic saw the UK travel plans and sessions cancelled.
They bring to these masterworks many years of experience: “The four CDs we recorded during this intense two-week period will always be treasured reminders for us of a brief, bucolic window of artistic fulfilment during a terribly challenging period for the world,” said James Ehnes.

[Op. 131] It is the long Andante, however, that for me marks the highlight of this performance. The tempo taken is perfect to allow the music’s whimsy full flight but to never become bogged down, and all players seem to be really relishing their individual “moments in the sun.”

This is big, traditional playing, expressive and full-bodied, with plentiful vibrato and where each quartet member enters into a communal musical embrace with his or her colleagues.
