About

Poised at the convergence of 18th Century French and Italian schools, Leclair and Senaillé were the French Paganinis of their day.

Technically challenging yet full of poetry, rhythmically varied and always dance-like, their sonatas find two fervent advocates in William Christie and Théotime Langlois de Swarte.

Transcending generational differences, the “venerated elder statesman of early music” (Opera News) and the youthful violin prodigy join forces to help us rediscover these still unjustly neglected pages.

  • Presto Recording of the Week

October 2021

Senaillé has been ill-served in the concert hall and the studio. This splendid disc, outstandingly well recorded, makes a pleasing gesture towards remedying matters...Langlois de Swarte negotiates all with insouciant ease, enhanced by the rapport of Christie’s harpsichord playing.

March/April 2022

De Swarte has a gentle, lyrical tone on his Baroque violin, yet he brings a measure of virtuosic brilliance and even passionate roughness when called for. Christie brings his lifelong experience in the French Baroque style to provide intelligently and imaginatively worked out realizations of the continuo bass line; one feels that a supporting string bass would be an intrusion on this intimate partnership.

October 2021

Langlois de Swarte...takes the music magnificently in his stride, avoiding over-fussy articulation and digging into the strings of his strong-voiced Stainer violin to make it sing. Christie’s continuo-playing is similarly free of needless elaboration, yet always quick, responsive and attentive to sonority.

30th July 2021

There’s no sense in the performances that de Swarte is in any way subordinate or taking the role of an apprentice; despite his youth and Christie’s vast experience, it’s a partnership of equals.
