Rignol has given us a truly masterful set of suites. She makes her viola de gamba sing—whether during the beautiful introspective sarabandes or the boisterous dancing gigues. The aspect of dance is one of the highpoints of this collection. Her use of rubato is kept well in check and only serves harmonic and musical purposes when tastefully interjected.

Although she does not alter the actual music much, Rignol’s performances benefit from the gamba’s silvery lightness of sound.
