Messager’s score is a minor masterpiece. His gifts as an orchestrator are evident from the start...Stefan Blunier conducting the Munich Radio Orchestra has clearly lost his heart to Messager’s music.

This musical comedy is simply full of charm, warmth, and humor. Conductor Stefan Blunier has the idiom to his fingertips and the result is splendid. The sound is well balanced with the voices out in front just a shade. This is recommended.

[Gens's] subtle artistry, uncovering verbal and vocal delicacies in the simplest melodic phrase, has never seemed more precious…[Dupuis] possesses a very fine baritone instrument used with sensitivity and imagination.

Look beyond the champagne-bubbles and bedroom farce antics and it quickly becomes apparent that this Fledermausesque rom-com about an unscrupulous American tycoon and his neglected wife has plenty of heart and soul: Gens brings elegance, wit and pathos to the latter role, and the Act Two duet in which she falls into the arms/bed of her new lover (complete with a cheeky nod to the first act of Die Walküre) really sizzles. Passionnément indeed.
