- Zachow was born in Leipzig, into a family of musicians. As was customary in these times he learned to play most of the instruments in general use: violin, oboe, dulcian, treble, cornet, harpsichord and organ. At age 21 he was appointed organist of the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle, a prestigious post. Here he settled as a highly respected musician, composer and teacher. Among his students was Georg Friedrich Händel, whose genius he immediately recognized. Händel held his teacher in high esteem and provided for his family after Zachow’s death.

- Zachow’s style is representative of the Central-German keyboard tradition, in which a highly developed counterpoint and a dramatic rhetoric are the key elements.
