About

Schubert’s song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, written almost two hundred years ago, is one of the supreme tests of the lieder singer’s art. The duo brings to life the story of a young miller who wanders the countryside in search of work and sees his carefree world transformed within the course of the song cycle.

This contrast of course requires a nuanced vocal range. “By recording it now, while I’m relatively young, I can still bring many light colours to the music as well. The piece makes no sense to me without them.”

April 2021

Overall, these two musicians are so confident and polished, it ’s hard to see why the much-adored girl isn’t besotted with this robust, healthy, velvet-voiced lover with his equally smooth and perceptive pianistic sidekick...if you like your heroes heroic and an artful performance of this great cycle, then this is one for you.

May 2021

Schuen has a superb, free-ranging voice, used with taste and invariable sensitivity to the text. His unforced exuberance in the opening songs could hardly be bettered.

7th March 2021

His entire approach to this much-recorded cycle is fresh...This is very much a young man’s view of Schubert’s masterpiece, but its emotional truthfulness, underpinned by Heide’s eloquent playing, leave one moved at, and in no doubt of, his suicide in the stream in Des Baches Wiegenlied.
