About
2021 marks 100 years since the death of Camille Saint-Saëns, one of the acknowledged masters of French music. Pianist Bertrand Chamayou, violinist Renaud Capuçon and cellist Edgar Moreau salute him with this album of three of his finest chamber works: the Violin Sonata No 1, Cello Sonata No 1 and Piano Trio No 2. "These are splendid works," says Bertrand Chamayou, "but only relatively rarely performed and recorded. This is essential French Romantic chamber music and French performers of our generation have a duty to share it with audiences."

One of the crucial features of all three works is a contrast between light and heavy, neither of them ever given their head for too long. Obviously in this respect the piano possesses a wider range than the two string instruments, and Chamayou takes splendid advantage of this with pearly, unpedalled fingerwork at one extreme and powerful oratory at the other.

[The Trio is] the disc’s high point, a beautifully proportioned, wonderfully even-handed performance, done with an understated virtuosity that allows the work’s emotional ambiguities to fully register. Saint-Saëns’s piano-writing is nothing if not exacting here, but where some interpreters can be overemphatic at the start, Chamayou really does play the opening chords très légerement..It’s a superbly engaging, at times challenging interpretation that ranks among the finest.

The Erato collection of sonatas for violin and for cello, together with the second of the piano trios, all played with a real belief in the music’s quality by violinist Renaud Capuçon, cellist Edgar Moreau and pianist Bertrand Chamayou is a reminder that there are treasures to be unearthed there.
