About

Warner Classics’ final release for Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year is a charming programme of chamber music with flute. The four works, all dating from the earlier years of the composer’s career, were recorded in June 2020 in Berlin’s Pierre Boulez Saal by a distinguished group of musicians led by Daniel Barenboim, here in his role as pianist, and flautist Emmanuel Pahud. Joining them are two of Pahud’s colleagues from the Berliner Philharmoniker, the orchestra’s First Concertmaster Daishin Kashimoto and its Principal Viola, Amihai Grosz, and two players with links to the Wiener Philharmoniker, its Principal Bassoon Sophie Dervaux, and Silvia Careddu, formerly its Principal Flute.

March 2021

Pahud starts the disc with [the G major Violin Sonata], in his own arrangement, with Daniel Barenboim picking out clear, focused detail in the piano part. If you are familiar with the violin version you might miss the bite of bow on string in the outer movements, but otherwise Pahud’s range of tone colour ensures that nothing else registers as being lost, and the slow movement gains new atmosphere from the way the dark flute tone sets up a delicate play of light and shade with the piano.

February 2021

Pahud is the star but never outshines his partners. Barenboim’s presence is that of facilitator, éminence grise and ever-reliable accompanist. For Beethoven minus the heaven-storming, nothing could be finer.
