About

Expressing his own cultural identity, guitarist Thibaut Garcia combines Rodrigo's archetypally Spanish 'Concierto de Aranjuez' with a declaration of l'esprit français: Alexandre Tansman's neoclassical 'Musique de cour', inspired by the court of Louis XIV. Garcia's heritage is Spanish, but he is French, born in the city of Toulouse, where this album was recorded with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and the young British conductor Ben Glassberg.

Christmas 2020

This bright and driven Concierto de Aranjuez [is] played with a clarity that manages to achieve the shock of the new despite being the world’s best known concerto for his instrument. Garcia’s great attentiveness to tone and expression marks this out...Glassberg and the Orchestra National du Capitole de Toulouse are thoroughly committed in return.

Awards Issue 2020

Rarely has such a combination of virtuosity, intelligence, character and flair been brought to bear on this most popular of all concertos… Garcia’s ability to meticulously mould the trajectory of a strum as much as a phrase, without the slightest hint of premeditation, stems from locating the emotional epicentre of the Rodrigo in the Adagio’s cadenza and working outwards.

October 2020

Rodrigo’s evergreen comes up as fresh as paint in the hands of Garcia and Glassberg, with lightly-sprung, vivacious dance-rhythms in the outer movements and some beautifully-shaped solos from the Toulouse players; the same Terpsichorean spirit is ever in evidence in Alexandre Tansman’s Robert de Visée-inspired concerto, given with a supple courtly grace that never stiffens into starchiness, and the four dances by Sainz de la Maza, who premiered the Rodrigo.
