About
Prokofiev’s melodies often have a singing quality that – allied to their harmonic tartness and rhythmic bite – makes them ideally suited to the violin, and so it is hardly surprising that violinists have raided the rest of his output to make more of those tunes their own. This recording presents 37 such transcriptions, drawn from his music for the piano and the stage.

November 2020
The performances of them by Kalnits and Chaplina are all consistently fine. To cite a few, the Amoroso from Boris Godunov is a very charming piece played with great feeling here and the frisky Gavotte from the Op. 32 Four Piano Pieces gets a truly spirited performance from the duo, as they subtly highlight the humor and mischief of the music in this utterly brilliant arrangement by Jascha Heifetz.

In [Heifetz's] version the spiky, two-minute march from The Love for Three Oranges again displays brevity as pure genius; as often do the 20 piano miniatures of Visions Fugitives, arranged by Viktor Derevianko and Yair Kless, the violin sonority lending a new fascination.
