Since this premier recording was first released in 1975, Korngold’s 1920 opera is now a repertory piece programmed around the world...the performance under Leinsdorf is unlikely to be bettered, with René Kollo (the obsessive Paul), Carol Neblett (as Marietta/Marie his dead wife’s doppelgänger) and Hermann Prey, a deluxe cameo in Pierrot’s famous “Lied”.
