An artist’s conscious espousal of a style is connected with their need to direct the audience's attention. But artists differ in how directive they want to be – freedom of audience interpretation is an essential element of the post-Romantic concept of art. Fox's ‘distancing of the self’ implies a hesitancy here. However, his pieces celebrate how they are made or performed, driven by ideas or processes – and this is essentially stylistic.
