The disc starts out with Beethoven’s only real song-cycle, An die ferne Geliebte, and I have never heard this piece so tellingly and heartbreakingly sung. The recorded sound here is quite exceptional for its age. The piano sound is very solid, with no breakup even in loud passages. There is great immediacy here with the singer very present and yet without the sound being dry.
