About

César Franck was a childhood prodigy who gained later renown as an organist and teacher. His compositions received scant attention until the success of Le Chasseur maudit, a symphonic morality tale that vividly portrays the ‘accursed huntsman’ from his defiance of the Sabbath to a dramatic chase and a horrific fate. Les Éolides is infused with Wagnerian colours and depicts the mythological Aeolids as they reawaken nature with their song. Franck’s lushly orchestrated final symphonic poem Psyché expresses the power of love in dreams and a passionate union.

Awards and reviews

September/October 2020

You won’t find a better version of Les Éolides than this one...Lightness of touch is Tingaud’s strong suit, and this confectionary tone poem of nearly Mendelssohnian delicacy results in a happy evocation of “the breezes.”

31st May 2020

Tingaud has the music in his blood and draws playing of ravishing beauty from the RSNO, whose priapic horns in Le Chasseur maudit (Accursed Huntsman) make a splendid sound.

21st May 2020

Performances of any of his five symphonic poems are rare, but Jean-Luc Tingaud’s selection of three of them is a reminder of what a vivid and effective orchestral composer Franck could be.

20th June 2020

A few seconds’ exposure to Franck’s Le Chasseur maudit should have you wondering why this punchy short work isn’t a repertoire standard...Tingaud’s Royal Scottish National Orchestra are on superb form; horns, cellos and bells excelling in the slow introduction, the cursed huntsman’s illicit jaunt a dark and thrilling ride. Berlioz and Wagner are the obvious influences, and anyone who’s dismissed Franck as a purveyor of stodgy organ music should urgently reconsider; this short work is brilliantly orchestrated and full of life.
