About

Irina Chukovskaya's new album is devoted entirely to the works of Schubert.
Franz Schubert's Sonata in A major D. 959, next to the famous last Sonata D. 960, is one of the most enigmatic works of pianist Irina Chukovskaya. Each of its movements, seemingly ful l of simplicity and numerous references to the classical order, is characterised by a huge expressive individualism, which is a real challenge for the pianist. In turn, Impromptus D. 899 are compositions that may not be so enigmatic and mysterious, but at the same time they are full of melodic beauty typical of Schubert.

Schnabel’s 1937 recording of this sonata shows the way, and Chukovskaya plays in the same mode. Like Schnabel, she looks for potential drama to bring out, as in the contrasting themes in the Scherzo. Her reading of that movement is exceptional, in fact. In the finale she leans into the moving line rather than letting the songful main theme glide more expansively. There’s a more poised way to approach the finale, but Chukovskaya’s is satisfying.
