I can have nothing but praise for the performance here. The ensemble and soloists are all first-rate, and their sensitive and lively interpretations of Destouches music are spot on. The instrumental ensemble is in tune and the tempos varied enough to bring out the various details. Ornamentation is ubiquitous, but also done quite tastefully, even if the style itself requires a copious amount.
February 2020
The performance is dominated by the Apollon of the fine haute-contre Mathias Vidal, who combines technical accomplishment— including an ability to articulate ornamentation cleanly—with fervent ardency…if the idiomatic orchestral playing under Louis-No l Bestion de Camboulas doesn’t attain the level that the best French ensembles achieve in this repertoire, it is never less than accomplished.
