These energising accounts of Schumann’s (officially) second and fourth symphonies are beautifully judged: Philippe Herreweghe’s conducing treads a fine line that draws forth most of what’s best in them…Sound quality is clean and vivid, complementing the clarity of the orchestral playing,. As is often the case, Schumann comes across best when its wings are not weighed down.

If these accounts are less emphatic than Gardiner’s live LSO recordings, the perhaps more subtle playing of the Antwerp band is rewarding, and Herreweghe’s gentler view of Schumann, the symphonist struggling with his mental demons, is a valid alternative.
