A young Canadian-Russian-German quartet is about to storm into quartet heaven! The Eliot Quartett plays on Beethoven's dizzying op. 18 No. 1 and contrasts it with Karol Szymanowski's op. 56. [Szymanowski], the Eliot’s intimate sonorities emphasize its links to Ravel and then to its echoes of Tristan. For the rough, folk rhythms of the Rondo (really a Scherzo), the Eliot delivers an almost wild fury. It then luxuriates in the exotic colors and lush harmonies of the finale’s great fugue, with its angular, folk-derived melodies. As the movement draws to a close, the Eliot’s playing becomes ferocious in its intensity, then stops dead for the final four slashing chords.
