The Trio Italiano d’Archi presents stylish, polished, highly appealing performances of these two substantial works. At no time do we feel that the medium leaves anything to be desired; on the contrary, the warm genial sound of the viola comes well into the foreground in a way that seldom occurs in a string quartet. The playing is lively—more vigorous than elegant—but that is what Beethoven more often than not requires.
