Feltsman is the last interpreter whose mazurkas I expected to be not only carefree but also danceable. Most pianists fuss with the rhythmic pulse to the point that each mazurka becomes a kind of shy hesitation waltz. I generally gravitate to performers who play from inside the music, but frankly, Feltsman has the advantage of being listenable over a long stretch. This set is eminently recommendable so long as you know in advance what you are in for. As ever, Feltsman’s playing is clean and precise; the recorded sound is close and lifelike.
