Zgólka’s playing is spirited and precise. He handles the technical challenges ably, with dazzling control, secure intonation, and clear articulation. His vibratoless tone will not appeal to those with an aversion to the period string sound, but it is not too shrill or abrasive. On the basis of this release, Carl Höckh appears to be a composer of significant accomplishment, and the rediscovery of his works is welcome.
