April 2019
What the new accounts have are the virtues of Brabbins’s versions of Tippett’s First and Second…: a purposeful intentness, with care for dynamics and rhythmic precision…though with no lack of virile energy and lyrical grace in the response of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and a finely-contoured delivery of the taxing soprano role in the Third from Rachel Nicholls.
April 2019
Brabbins and his attentive recording engineers ensure that clarity of detail always serves the broader symphonic processes that remain at the heart of Tippett’s visions. In this context it is especially rewarding to have the first recording of the recently resurrected Symphony in B flat.
March 2019
The vibrant playing by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra is superb. I enjoyed the gutsy performance by singer Rachel Nicholls.
5th May 2019
The composer withdrew [the Symphony in B flat], but the recording makes this a collectible issue, especially as the performances of the Third and Fourth are so compelling.
Musical Opinion April-June 2019
An absolute must-have set of discs. For many, the issue of the year.
classicalsource.com March 2019
High production values (Andrew Keener), superb sound (Simon Eadon) and totally committed musicianship (concert performances beforehand) make this release another winner.
April 2019
Full credit Brabbins’s brave BBC Scottish players for clarifying Tippett’s dense counterpoint.
