SOMM Recordings announces the launch of a major new series surveying Mozart’s complete Piano Sonatas featuring the acclaimed 'lion of the keyboard' Peter Donohoe in his highly-anticipated first-ever recordings of the composer’s solo piano works.he landmark six-volume series launches with two early Sonatas – Nos.2 (K280) and 6 (K284) – and a later masterpiece – No.17 (K570), the first composed when Mozart was 18 in 1774, the last, described by Alfred Einstein as 'the ideal' of the composer’s sonatas, in 1789 at the age of 33.

He appears to take early Beethoven as his interpretive trajectory with a gloves-off spontaneity that imbues these magical scores with a compelling vitality and freshness.

For anyone who might consider Donohoe miscast in Mozart, it should be remembered that this was his choice of repertoire, not one imposed on him by an A&R department. Accordingly, he plays these pieces with a personal involvement that is as touching as it is fascinating and finely considered.
