Another item in The Fryderyk Chopin Institute’s new recording series: Resonance. The CD contains chamber music masterpieces by Andrzej Panufnik, recorded by the brilliant Apollon Musagète Quartett and featuring Hungarian flutist Dóry Ombódi as well as double bassist Sławomir Rozlach.
Aside from the composer’s complete string quartets, the CD contains Hommage à Chopin in a version for flute and string quintet.

Overshadowed by his symphonies, Panufnik’s string quartet have begin to find favour – this disc by the Apollon Musagète Quartet being the fourth to present them as an integral though contrasted sequence…Interpretatively, the AMQ come between the warmer manner of the Brodsky and incisive attack of the Tippett, whose fearlessness has the edge overall.

The hauntingly beautiful Hommage à Chopin, originally written in 1949 for wordless soprano and piano, speaks of his attachment to his homeland via Mazovian folk music and a reference to Polish Lenten church music. The imagination over the span of these quartets is remarkable.
