About
For collectors of Tchaikovsky Symphonies these recordings, taken from the Complete Tchaikovsky Symphonies box set (LPO-0101, September 2017), are available as a separate release for the first time on the LPO label and join previous releases of the Manfred and numbered symphonies (LPO-0009, 0039, 0064) to complete the set. The Symphonies on this disc were written earlier in Tchaikovsky’s career and are lighter in tone than the more dramatic Fourth, Fifth and Sixth. They are based on Ukrainian folk songs and German and Polish national styles, and are more reminiscent of his ballet scores. The London Philharmonic Orchestra’s performances of Tchaikovsky’s complete Symphonies were described as'universally excellent' (David Mellor, Classic FM - on the box set) and 'terrific' (Gramophone) and were shortlisted for an International Classical Music Award.

Christmas Issue 2018
Jurowski and the London Philharmonic give a delectable account of Tchaikovsky’s usually less favoured Third Symphony…Jurowski’s conducting remains purposeful throughout…And the finale is never overbearing, thanks to the LPO’s sensitive shaping of its mazurka rhythm.
Classical Music January 2019
Vladimir Jurowski’s tenure with the LPO has been one of ferocious imagination.

Heard on their own terms, these performances are excellent and enjoyable, bypassing comparisons.
